Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum (BIPF) is a national platform of indigenous peoples of
Bangladesh. Founded in 2001. BIPF has composed with 79 national committee members, and
25 Executive Body members - representing of the nine geographical regions of the country
such as; i) CHT region, ii) Northern region, iii) Greater Mymensingh, iv) Greater Sylhet, v)
Greater Dhaka, vi) Greater Khulna, vii) Chattagram region, viii) Greater Barisal and ix)
Greater Comilla region. BIPF is dedicated to focus the recognition of the rights of
indigenous people in Bangladesh. The Forum brings the issues and views of indigenous
peoples such as the rights of self-determination, land rights, women and youth rights as well
as most crucial civil and political rights to the attention of the United Nations, Bangladesh
Government, civil society organisations, academics, journalist and non-government
organisations. BIPF’s mission is to assist indigenous communities in working for Indigenous
Peoples’ rights and opportunities by implementing rights-based approaches. BIPF
implements its activities in a fully participatory and bottom-up approach with an emphasis on
empowerment of indigenous communities.
BIPF is an independent organization led and managed by indigenous peoples that relates to
and collaborate with different communities on common issues and interest. BIPF’s secretariat
with its staffs is in the charge of coordinate the implementation of the different activities
guided by the Executive Body. The Executive Body takes its decision through the General
Assembly (GA) which meets once in three years to assess indigenous peoples’ political
situation and organizational activities of the BIPF. The Executive body is the highest
decision-making body in between the GA of the BIPF composed with 25 members.
The overall activities of the BIPF is to strengthen indigenous peoples’ movement through
building cooperation with human rights, Civil Society, Non-government organizations, and
sensitize non-indigenous peoples, policy makers, academics and involvement of women,
youth and students in Bangladesh.
